Form of Organization

 

The Cross Timbers Conservancy is in process of formation as a non-profit Texas corporation, with application for 501 (c) (3) status from the Internal Revenue Service.  It is expected that this process will be complete by December 31, 2006.

 

Memberships, Affiliations, and Links

 

The Ancient Cross Timbers Consortium for Research, Education, and Conservation.

Based at the University of Arkansas Tree-Ring Laboratory, the Consortium is devoted to interdisciplinary research and multi-institutional educational activities in the Cross Timbers region.  Universities in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, along with environmental groups and government agencies have joined together in this activity.  Please see www.uark.edu/misc/xtimber.

 

The Botanical Research Institute of Texas.

A non-profit corporation founded in 1987 to house the Southern Methodist University Herbarium and botanical library.  Those collections of some 450,000 specimens represented the lifetime work of Lloyd Shinners, one of the most influential Texas botanists of the 20th century. In October, 1997, Vanderbilt University donated its herbarium of over 360,000 specimens to BRIT, and continuing additions to the collection have brought the total number of specimens housed at the institute to over one million.  Please see www.brit.org.

 

Austin College Center for Environmental Studies.

The Center for Environmental Studies promotes multidisciplinary inquiry of environmental issues and problems through education, research and outreach programs.  Among other projects, the Center is involved in an effort to restore the native tallgrass prairie ecosystem to the college's Sneed Environmental Research Area.  Please see www.austincollege.edu/category.asp?1450.

 

LBJ National Grassland, Cross Timbers Research Natural Area

A part of the USDA Forest Service office in Lufkin, TX, the LBJ Grassland is located near Alvord, TX.  See www.fs.fed.us/grasslands.
